Reduce Plastic Bags?

By Money Sick | November 16, 2007

Reduce plastic bags, cut down usage of plastic bags, use your own plastic bags, etc etc. Can we really reduce and cut down the usage of plastic bags? I do not think so.

At home, I have a lot of garbage to throw everyday. Unfinished food, spoiled food, newspaper, sweets wrapper, plastic wrappers and so much more rubbish. There are no rubbish chute at home, unlike my mother’s days. Those older flats will have rubbish chute in their home. Throwing rubbish is much easier. Perhaps you do not need plastic bags if you just throw ‘everything’ down the rubbish chute. The cleaner would have a hard time! But can we care more when we want to reduce plastic bags?

Nothing is free. If I want plastic bags to throw rubbish, I need to buy. Why should I buy something which is going to be thrown away?

When I go shopping, do I need to bring so many plastic bags with me? I always buy in bulk. Can you imagine I bring so many plastic bags with me when I go shopping? It is so inconvenient and we are paying more GST now! We are customers. Customers are king. NTUC is offering a ten-cent off when you bring your own plastic bags. What is ten-cent?

Can you imagine carrying recycle bags with these things? I would be a Santa Claus! It is so inconvenient for me to bring so many plastic bags out for shopping in the city or shopping centres too. I brought my own shopping cart when I purposely went shopping for grocery. There are times where we just feel like buying and we thought of ’stocking’ up our inventories at home. No plastic bags on Wednesday, how are we going to shop with peace and have a good shopping spree?

I do not waste plastic bags. I collect plastic bags. Plastic bags are so useful at home. Without them, I do not know how to throw my rubbish. Please provide a solution for us, home owners first if you want to encourage us not to use plastic bags. I do not want to buy plastic bags to throw them away! I do not want to spend more money, having more inconvenience and to act like a Santa Claus as well.

Do you know that this plastic bag contains water on it. These are stagnant water that will breed mosquitoes. I know very well how mosquitoes come about and I will not breed mosquitoes at home. But those people from ministry of environment comes to our house to check. How thoroughly they checked? We told them about our concern — that the gardens are full of mosquitoes, as there are puddles of water, and so many construction sites going on. What they do? By visiting our home, they are showing us that they are doing their job. But what really is important?

I am not these people who throw rubbish around. I do not throw plastic bags on the floor and I do not waste plastic bags. I do not waste. I know that everything is accumulative and everything starts from a little. I can be a good citizen. I can be a good environmentalist. I too want to be a peaceful person who would co-operate. But who will give me money and who will give me a hand? It is all about education. You have to nurture the people, give them proper education and not force people to the wall. When you want something to be done, offer a good solution to everybody.

Do not do anything just for show!

[...] Recycle Bags Fashion Trends There are many shops which give out free recycle bags. Not long ago, Old Chang Kee also gave out free recycle bags to customer who purchase more than S$10 with them. I had one when I had graving for eating their curry puffs. So far, their recycle bag is the nicest. It is big, yellow in colour, and nice. Metro also gave out free recycle bags, even earlier than Old Chang Kee. They come in pink, red and orange. I have so many free recycle bags at home. But they cannot be used to throw rubbish at home! How can I not use plastic bags? [...]
