Medical Malpractice
By Money Sick | November 10, 2007
Years back, after being discharged from the hospital, Ricsson and me went home. For a few days I breastfed him and everything was normal. Richard and I brought him to Dr. John Lim for checkup and he was a little ‘yellow’. Dr John Lim told me not to eat too much ginger. Other than that, everything was okay. Back home, Richard and I would carry Ricsson to the park in the morning for some sunlight.
However, things were not alright one day when I discovered Ricsson crying and wailing loudly. He was abnormal that morning. I quickly brought him to the doctor and he was admitted to the hospital. Medical test showed that he had meningitis and he was infected with streptococcus during birth.
When asked, Dr John Lim said that he had not given me antibiotic for this and he had apparently overlooked this. The medical expenses for Ricsson’s hospital stay was not cheap and his life was at risk. We were not sure if his brain were infected and we need to send him for several test after that.
This is an example of medical malpractice and we do not know what to do, but just let the issue rest. Another example of risks for baby is Kernicterus which is a medical term for baby who has too much bilirubin in the blood. High level of bilirubin in the blood can cause brain damage to the baby. That is why doctor must often check babies for jaundice and advice parents about jaundice. However, not all people are perfect in this world. There is always exceptional cases and medical malpractice and negligence on the doctors’ part. This is not something new. The best way to prevent Kernicterus is to prevent jaundice from happening. A doctor should know very well about the danger and risk of Kernicterus. However, babies who develop kernicterus are very likely victims of medical malpractice. Should this happen, you can seek the help of Kernicterus Advocacy Network! Seek justice and do not pay innocent money!
