Employment Matters
By Money Sick | August 9, 2007
On this Special Day, I want to present this National Day Gift to you, National Education Gallery of QiHua Primary School, to show you the history of Singapore.
Money Sick seems to be neglected. Not exactly. I find time for all my blogs. Some blogs have been left not updated for two months, but I still visit them, patrol here and there. I set my priorities, the important ones will always be need to be done first.
Today is National Day and I want to wish everybody a very Happy National Day. If you would like to know a little introduction to History of Singapore, then visit my blog at PeaceBella.com or Peace Diary. It will be going to be a long holidays since the day after National Day is a holiday and we still have Saturday and Sunday. Of course this applies only to students and for self-employed people like me.
For self-employed, the sole proprietors and freelancers, whichever you called it, no work means no pay. So whether it is holiday a not, you need to work, if you want money. But you got to choose which day you would like to rest, or perhaps each day how many hours you want to work.
Which is better — be your own boss or call people boss? Well, I think it all depends on what you want. Both have advantages and disadvantages. You weigh the Pros and Cons and you make the final decision yourself.
Call People Boss
Advantages
1. You are sure to get your pay check at the end of the month. Peace of Mind, you have money! But that doesn’t mean you don’t need to produce results. Nothing is free. You need to show your talent and your worth.
2. Medical Benefits, Insurance Benefits and other company benefits like free chalet rentals for the family and free car, that you get to enjoy. The company don’t pay you for nothing. By giving you some benefits, they hope that you will work wholeheartedly for them. This is the kind of motivation that company can give you.
Disadvantages
1. Fixed time job, Monday to Friday or Monday to Saturday or shift duties. Cannot be late for work, have to report punctually. For people who are parents with small kids at home, this can be hard. Sometimes children fall sick or need to go for medical checkup or injection, you often need to take last minute leave or emergency leave. Your boss is not going to be happy if it is often the case if you have children with weak immunity.
2. Your Boss squeeze all your brain juice and your blood out of your body. You need to work hard, you need to meet deadlines to get your paycheck. You need to fight for good appraisals. Good appraisals means potential for higher pay rise and potential for promotion. For me, I always feel that pay increment is better than having a good title, which may hold even more responsibilities and stress.
Be Your Own Boss
Advantage
1. You have all the time yourself. You are the king or queen. You listen to yourself. You command yourself. You don’t need to see your boss face again. You work at a comfortable pace.
2. For people with children and elderly at home, being your own boss, you can have more flexible time to cater to the needs of younger children and the elderly when they need your help.
3. No doubt you can have fixed pay by working for people, your earnings are capped. Every month you are getting the same fixed amount. If you never try, you never know your true potential. Being an entrepreneur, allows you to create opportunities yourself. High risk high return. Low risk low return. Always remember that. High risk will not guarantee you high return but you have the POTENTIAL to have higher returns than what you would normally get if you are working for other people.
Disadvantage
1. No more scolding and reprimanding. No more office politics. But you must work extra hard yourself to pay yourself. You need to be self-motivated, be very focused and be disciplined if you want to be successful in your own career. You need to establish your own goals, your own datelines and be very committed into your work.
2. You may not be more ‘lonely’ or independent now that you are your own boss now. You need to do everything yourself. You need to learn to cut cost and reduce any overheads. There is equally as much stress as there are when you are working for other people. But this stress is targeted at different issues and different subjects.
Each kind of job whether you are working for people or people working for you or you working for yourself, is all the same. There are pros and cons. If time is your main concern, then you be your own boss. If money is the main concern and time is not a problem, I would rather choose to call people boss. If both money and time is a concern, I would choose to be my own boss still.
I had worked for people and I had worked for myself. I had worked in government service and I had worked in the private sector. If I do not have children, I would choose to work for the government.
I am working on my own now. I am satisfied with what I am now. I have no fixed income, but I have enough to spend and I have time to cater to my family needs. All I could say is I am able to cope with what I am earning and I am able to meet my own needs and my children’s needs.
Since I am writing about employment, this topic which is about Employee and Employer which I had written some time ago, might be of interest to some people.
