High-Class Beggars

By Money Sick | August 8, 2007

Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. ~Matthew 7:7

How true this is. If you don’t ask, who will know what you want? If you don’t seek, how you you find? Probably there are some exceptional case, just like the chinese story, the hunter who sit under the tree and waiting for the rabbit to knock into the tree again (????).

Beggars also ask people for money and some people took pity on them and give them money. They may be lucky if they do not ask and people just give it to them.

There are many financial advisers standing outside some metres away from CPF Board like that of Bishan and Causeway Point. They also do cold canvassing at MRT stations where traffic is good such as those of Tampines MRT station, Woodlands MRT station, Orchard Road MRT station and Jurong Point MRT station.

Whenever I walked past all these Financial advisers, they hardly approach me. Perhaps, only three out of ten will approach me. Most of them spent their time chatting with their colleagues. At any one time, all I see was only one or two talking to passers-by. The rest of them, mostly the ladies, are chatting with their colleagues. This is not productive at all. For all the time spent talking to colleagues, they might have missed out how many potential customers.

Financial advisers are like “high-class beggars”. I do not like to use the term high-class or low-class. But this is a common term for rich people to use. There was once, a rich woman who said my family is low-class people, just because of my parent’s profession and our living condition. If I am a “low-class person” then if I married my husband, then isn’t he a “low-class person” as well? And this woman still have the cheek to flirt with my husband, just because she is rich and don’t have to work. Everyday all she does was surf the net and have her husband gave her monthly allowance of more than $3K!

Beggars ask for money when they did not serve any purpose to anybody. They provide no service at all. Financial advisers is helping people. They approach passers-by, in an attempt to help people who need their assistance. When they asked, and you like their service, you are comfortable with him or her to be your personal financial advisers, you paid them for their service — when you invest your CPF with them or when you took up any insurance plans with them.

I was a Financial Adviser. During good months, if I am lucky, I can earn more than $8k a month. For that, I would be rushing here and there like mad, neglecting my family. I had a maid, and it was really hectic. When I had ‘cheong’ too much, I would slow down my pace, try to balance up again, go back to my family. In months where I had slowed down, my earnings will definitely drop because what you do today will affect what tomorrow comes. When you have no activity today, you cannot expect to have any appointments at all for the next few weeks or so. Thus, my rhythm is up and down, more or less balanced up with work and family. I may be full-time in Financial Planning, but I am working on part-time basis. You may be working part-time basis in Financial Planning, but you can work full-time as well. In Financial Planning, you are your own boss, and you get to plan your time. But you are not really your own boss, you have your manager on top of you and you need to report to him or her as well. Your manager would want you to produce good results. They would want you to bring in more sales, more money.

“High-Class beggars”? No, I was proud of my profession and I knew what my purpose was and I spoke with pride and dignity. For anyone who says no, you just have to carry on ‘talking’. You will find one who will ‘accept’ you. The way you talk, the way you dress and the way you believe in yourself and your products, the prospect can see and feel. If you believe in yourself, you believe in your products, the customer can feel it and they would know. “High-Class beggars” or “Low-class Beggars”, I do not care what you call it. As long as I know what I am doing and I am doing the right thing, I am earning what I have contributed for my service, I served my purpose, I have money coming in, the rich can say anything they want of Financial Advisers. Afterall, Financial Advisers are people who help, they are people who are able to help the common people around them, who may not be so educated and not be so knowledgeable about money management. So what if you are rich? You are rich, you have money, does not mean that you have every rights to look down on people who have no money. You are just lucky that you are born in rich family, and you do not need to work!
