Google Adsense Rants

Those in blue is what is quoted exactly from Dolmere Talamasca blog. Any spelling error I will not correct. Any words which is highlighted is what I want to stress on and those in green is what I want to say.

Top Sites Redux (Posted by Dolmere Talamasca on July 5, 2007 12:11 PM)
Source: http://www.lovelymachine.com/Dolmere/2007/07/top_sites_redux.html#more

Richard Palace posted a comment to my blog entry about his website.

Richard Palace can always ignored the remarks of these negative people on the web. However, he is a responsible man. He values any valuable remarks about his website. This world has both positive and negative people. For people who are negative or always searching for faults, they will never appreciate anything that is done to them. For promptly replying to him, he was not satisfied. He wanted to find out more.

He is so dissatisfied with sltopsites but yet until now, the little cute button which he had claim is still at his website, with a ranking of 44, previously 33. Did Richard Palace do anything to affect his ranking, or is something wrong with the script Richard Palace is running? Or should he asked more people to come and vote for him?

There’s some good news and some bad news in there. I thought I’d create a new blog entry to reply since I wanted to include a picture or two and that didn’t seem appropriate in a blog comment thread. Let’s do the old “inline reponse” thing so popular in today’s email communcations, eh?

“Dolmere,

I am just trying to make Second Life Topsites interesting. It’s still a very new site, rarely a month ago and many expected me to perform magic. I am still learning.”

I can understand the still learning part.

“Don’t use display ads? Hosting aren’t free. Someone has to be my sponsor. Who want to be a sponsor when their ads can’t even be seen?”

Vint said it quite well in her comments section:

1. “On the ads: You should have told the people from the start that you were going to place ads on the site. By subscribing to be listed they sort of associate themselves with your site, so it would have been only decent to make that clear from the start.
2. Imho there are two types of ad people: those who have content and put some ads with it to pay for hosting expenses etc. and those who have ads and then need to think of some content to generate traffic to go with the ads. I place you in the second category of ad people.”

I hold to my earlier comment that sneaking the ads in after the fact without notifying the users or making that intention clear from the start was suspicious at best. Further it costs next to nothing to host a simple php script like this - hell your own richardpalace.com could easily host this at say richardpalace.com/sltopsites or sltopsites. richardpalace.com and save a buck or two. I think of something like a top site blog as a community resource - it’s certainly my fault for thinking someone would want to contribute to the community of readers like, say, Tao Takashi does with his site. Tao has ZERO adverts on his feedreader sites. Tao asks for nothing in return for hosting a simple web page though his server resources are likely taxed more heavily than the top sites page.

“I have 2 so called ‘visitor tracking script’ installed. Statcounter and Google Analytics. I will keep Google Analytics and remove statcounter. Many sites have that installed. Its used to analysis the website and how it can optimised. Its not used to track visitors. For more information about Google Analytics, go to http://www.google.com/analytics/”

Both Vint and I use analytics as both of us have called out in our blog many times. In fact I called that fact out in the blog post that Richard’s comment was placed on! Telling me to find more information about google analytics when I confess to using the service seems either obtuse or rude. Oh well.

“Second Life Topsites listed your site url as you have entered. The pagerank script is provided by third party and I have verified that the url you provided is pagerank 4.”

This is where the pictures come in. Making a comment about an analysis tool in a blog entry where I already assert my use of that tool is one thing - perhaps it’s “lazy reader-itis” a little known disease feared by marketing departments everywhere. I can deal with that. This is something completely different - it’s either complete blindness, complete lack of research, disinterest in facts, distorted reality or a mix off all of the above :)

What google pagerank is listed there? I’m not stupid enough to think that the google pagerank is manipulated - this is simply code that runs on the top site to fetch google’s data on my pagerank status and displays it. It’s a nice little piece of work with a minor flaw which Richard does not want to admit to. The pagerank listed is “0″ nor “4″ as his comments suggests. Are we looking at the same top site? The same listing for my blog? The same frikkin internets?

“Second Life Topsites did not pass anyone or sell anyone your email. Privacy policy is now available at http://www.sltopsites.com/index.php?a=page&id=privacy”

This was a good move and a nice attempt to respond to a valid criticism.

Overall I’m still on the fence… but leaning…

Not everything is 100% perfect. We have tried various scripts on the internet — templates, google page rank and so on. These scripts are all written by humans and they are passed around on the internet for people to use. There are bound to be little error here and there and when you install these scripts, you always have to ‘redesign’, check the scripts, test run, troubleshoot and many more, to finally have a perfect running script which you want ultimately.

As what Richard Palace had mentioned, the site is very new. Do you expect miracle to happen? Tell me, who is the site owner? Who has so much time to do everything in one day? Have you heard of the proverb, Rome is not built in a day? Even my own website, Money Sick, I take days to finally settle down. But not quite fully done all my job yet, considering marketing, links, and various aspects. Nothing is to be perfected in one day or even weeks.

“a little flaw which Richard did not want to admit”, well, is it a big matter? There are so many places where you can check your page rank. Not every blog directories have this feature. That script which Richard use, do not have Page Rank function, neither does it have Website Thumbnail. Richard Palace need to install all these scripts in order to get all these in the directories. Why is he doing that? To make the directories a better place! Why he give out money and held contest? To attract people to come. As it is a very new site as he has mentioned!

With a new site of page rank of not even 0, it is NA! Do you expect it to earn money? Do you expect any search engine to find sltopsites? Why Dolmere Talamasca can place his own google adsense ads and why the owner of sltopsites, Richard Palace cannot have google adsense ads on his site?

Look at Dolmere Talamasca website. Hasn’t he ’sneaked in’ the google ads also and has classified it as ‘Advertisers-Spons0rs’! Is it a way to mislead his own readers?

Why host in different domain and not richardpalace.com/blahblahblah?

Why ’sneaking in’ google adsense ads?

This person obviously do not understand business. This person obviously do not understand how to optimize google adsense and how important a domain name is! I shall not mention much here at this point. I have a lot of topic to post. I shall do it another time. As I mentioned, it is not possible to do everything in one day, and in a post too. Otherwise readers will get bored, readers will not come back for more! However, if you want to find out more, do a google search or yahoo search. There are so many answers to these topics. It is a popular topic as many people want to make money. I am not jealous of other people making money. Every site owners have their rights what they want on their webpage. Every siteowners have their wish what they want on their website. It is totally rude to demand what you want on other people website. This is total disrespectful.

Why some people are not putting google advertisements or any other sponsors? Well, there are many google adsense users who never stick to google guidelines. They got themselves suspended in the end. Can they put anymore ads? Of course not. There are the second group of people, those who have a full-time job offline. They have their metal rice bowls, they have their monthly salary. Surfing online, creating websites can be their interest or hobby. These group of people can sign up free domain name like yahoo geocities, blogspot or they can buy their own domain name, which cost little to people who are earning lots of money. To people who are not earning much money, to people who are poor, to people who are not making any monthly salary, any expenses is MONEY! The third group of people are people who are working on their offline job, having a fixed salary, or they are people who are working freelance such as the sales people, and so on. These third group of people come online to seek part-time source of money. They want to seek more money, or even try out making money online part-time first before they finally can quit their job if they are successful at it. These group of people may or may not sign up google adsense. But given an opportunity who will say no? Just look at the above snapshot! The fourth group of people are the full time make money online people. They have no job, no other source of income at all. Domain hosting who sponsor? Not working who give the family money? Not working who pay the website owner? Money fall down from the sky?

Which group are you? Obviously Dolmere Talamasca is the fortunate people who have a metal rice bowl and he does not need to depend on google adsense revenues. Domain hosting is peanuts to him. By the way, who is Dolmere Talamasca? There is no ‘about me’ at his site. Do I need to write to him to tell him about this also? I do not like to post about all these critical remarks. It is unhealthy and not a win-win situation for anybody. I hope that that would be the last post from him. I hope the ‘war’ will end.

‘Saving a buck or two’, well, as there are the few categories of people who are online as mentioned above, we got to see which categories of people the website owner belongs to. If you are doing a business online, you need to be professional. You want to make more money online, you need to be professional. Spend money to make money. Spend money here would mean buy domain name. Make money would mean use the website to make money. How to make money with websites? That would be covered in later of my posts in future, not here. If you can make more than what you can pay for your domain hosting every year, then why restrict yourself to a domain name with richardpalace.com/blahblahblah?

In this business world, you have to be creative. You need to be committed to your business and gain the trust of customers, regardless of which business you are doing. Richard Palace is revealing everything to the user or member of the directory, which he does not need to. But by telling these people that he is using his dedicated server, he had gained more mockery and sarcasm from these people. Honesty doesn’t pay for these people. It is never appreciated.

Telling these people that the ground contains dead people, dead corpse, they don’t believe. They need to ‘dig’, ‘dig’ whatever they can to see it for themselves. See what this person has done:

RichardPalace.com is hosted by Everyones Internet

sltopsites.com is hosted by Everyones Internet

Good move - this is bound to keep costs down as anyone with good bargaining skills will add a second domain name to an existing account for next to nothing.

“inline reponse” thing => Aha. I did not know that the thing I’m best at had a name.

*pulls over Dolmere to her side of the fence. we have guns and neko’s!!!* ;)

But good Analysis. I discovered his main site only after my blogposts. Yes, for once I did not do my research. Anyway, I think the only reason this guy is in SL is to make money, if you look at his activities. I’m not going to help him on that. *grins* (If you want to make money, at least make it by giving the community something they want/need.)

This is a comment by Vint Falken, the origin of SLTopsites Conspiracy.

Tell me what is the purpose of Linden Lab who launch Second Life? Provide free game, charity free game to users? Why Linden Lab charge you membership fee, why Linden Lab charge tier, why don’t you go tell Linden Lab, go question Linden Lab?

Btw. Dolmere. He said he had a ‘dedicated server’. So richardpalace.com and sltopsites.com are probably on the same server and a domain name is under EUR20 (at least with a reseller account, which you probably have if you have dedicated server.)

The issue here all arise out of Google Adsense Advertisements. So it is all about Money. Money is the cause of many unhappiness, many jealousy and other disputes. Money and Politics go hand in hand.
